A man named John Sutter hired a man named a man named James Marshall to construct a sawmill for him on the southern fork story of the American River. In 1848, Mr. Marshall found some flecks of gold in the tail race of sawmill. Soon the new got out and the Gold Rush was definitely on.

These days, all that remains is tree stump. However then known Placerville became known as Hang Town. Hang town was the 3rd largest in California, for some 150 years. Pittsburg is a community both progress and promise. The Mexican government granted almost 10,000 acres of property to a man named Miguel Mesa in 1839. The settlement was established and came to be known as New York by 1888. It wasn’t long before the region was being called New York landing, which thrived on fishing and the canning industry. When coal was discovered in the hills some three miles south of the settlement the name of this new settlement’s named was changed to Black Diamond.

Then the community was renamed to Pittsaburg in I911, Pittsaburg, and the a was changed to Pittsburg in 1942 when Camp Stoneman was constructed during this period. This was to have a considerable impact on the growth of the community. During World II, numerous solders went to fight in the Asiatic/Pacific operations, and Camp Stoneman was the last contact with the United States. The camp ceased operations in 1954 and with the addition of the lane to Pittsburg to the community for commercial and resident and commercial use.

The community of Pittsburg became an industry, struggling community from landscaped settlement. Pittsburg has grown into a pleasant community with planned commercial and business development. It offers affordably housing shopping malls, and recreational facilities.
