About Yuba City, CA

For a thousand years, Nisenan people lived in Yuba City, before the Europeans arrived. That’s where the story begins including plenty of amusing historic places and historical figures. Almost all of Sutter County now was part of a very large land area of the so called New Helvetia owns by John Sutter. The Sutter County started a stock ranch named the Hock Farm close to the location of what we call Yuba City.

In the year 1844, Yuba City was established on the land a by four men named Samuel Brannan, Henry Cheever and Pierson Reading, and John Sutter. Then three businessmen promoted a distribution hub for the Gold Rush 49ers supply. As they were the senior partners’, a man named Sam Brannan had the settlement laid lots so that the agents could sell the lots. During this current time, he was honored as was the community that has been named after him. He’s honored with the city part that is named after him. Yuba is one of the communities in California that met with the success of the as the county seat of Sutter County, with the population of 64,925 people according to 2010 census.

The major city of the Yuba City MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area) is Yuba City which encircles all of Yuba County and Sutter County with its population, and they were they were ranked 21st ranked with the largest metropolitan area aside from Chicago and Redding. The metropolitan area is part of the Greater Sacramento area.

Yuba City unemployment rate was approximately 14.9 % in September 2012, in August 2012 it was revised to 5.8 % and down from 16.4% after a year ago. In the early 1700’s, the Maidu people is lived peacefully in the area until they first encountered the Mexican and Spanish scouting patrol. During one of those expeditions, they saw some wild grapes growing through the river and they called it uba which means in Spanish translated into grapes, which makes one version of the name’s origin.

A large area of healthy land was granted (including the Yuba City area) by the Mexican government that settled with John Sutter (who’s land with had gold consequently discovered in the year 1848). Part of his land was sold to several enterprising men, who wanted to live and established a town close to the Feather River and Yuba River, a subdivision of the Sacramento River, with a plan in developing a successful commercial center supplying to a lots of gold miners going upstream to the fields of gold. In the meantime, there are also other towns who was developing on the Feather River’s eastern bank, it’s where Marysville was starting to be established. In the year, 1852, Yuba City was making good progress. They had a post office, grocery store and some 20 residential houses with approximately 150 citizens residing.

Yuba City became the country town in the year 1854 for Sutter County, CA. In the same year, unfortunately, people decided that Nicolaus is a better place as the country town and the seat relocated there. Some two years later, people from the country changed their mind and decided the first choice Yuba to be the country town, and it was announced in the year 1856, that is wasn’t changed since then. The community had their people increased influx of people after WW II.

Some storms dropped swarming rain all over northern California. The barrage caused all the rivers in the area to break through levees and to over-flow their banks. The Yuba City celebrated their Christmas eve full of sadness and particularly tragic. 38 people died and lots of damages was made in the downtown section. Approximatey around 500 – 600 residents were rescued from the flood water by the help of helicopter in the year 1955, according to the manager of Yuba County airport “Dick Brandt”
